This U.S. State Just Voted To Change Its Name

There was lots of issues on the ballot this year besides just who should be President. It was a big night for drugs as NBC News reported it was a tipping point with five states —Arizona,New Jersey,South Dakota,MontanaandMississippi— voters opting to legalize some form of marijuana use and Oregon became the first state to make possession of small amounts of harder drugs, including cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine, violations not punishable by jail time.

But one state, Rhode Island, had on the ballot the option of changing the name of the state! Rhode Island has been known as the “smallest state with the longest name.” Now you may be thinking South Carolina is longer than Rhode Island. Even their neighbor Massachusetts is longer. But the official name of the state has been “Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.”

In 2010 they put on the ballot the idea of dropping "and Providence Plantations" because of the association with slavery. People overwhelmingly voted (78% to 22%) to keep the original name. But 10 years later the residents have had a change of heart. 53% to 47%.
