Newly released surveillance video shows the dramatic moment when school coachKeanon Lowedisarmed a student who brought a loaded shotgun to high school. It shows Lowe taking the gun from 18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz and hugging him as another teacher takes the gun away before anyone was injured.
The teen carried the hidden gun, which contained one round, to Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon on May 17th, 2019. Police think he intended to hurt himself, but he didn’t get the chance. Lowe, a football and track-and-field coach and school security guard, says he saw something in the look in Granados-Diaz’s eyes and that his instincts took over. He said he saw the gun and lunged for it.
“I told him I was there to save him. I’m lucky and I’m happy that I was in that classroom for all those kids and I was able to prevent that tragedy. Then it was just me and Angel. It was a real emotional time. I felt compassion for him. A lot of times, especially when you’re young, you don’t realize what you’re doing until it’s over."
