Teen walks for the 1st time in 9 years at the prom!

A 17-year-old girl who lost her ability to walk when she was eight has taken her first steps since then and she got to do it at the prom. Tamesha Simmons has been in a wheelchair since she was 8. Doctors had been trying to figure out how to restore use of her legs but made the decision to have both of her legs amputated in February. Well she debuted her new prosthetic legs for the first time at a special prom held at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The teen ditched her wheelchair to take a spin on her own two feet and it was her first chance to do that in nearly nine years. “This was my first time. My mom saw me stand up and walk, and she was really happy. I did way better standing up and stuff here than in therapy.” Tamesha admits she was nervous before showing off her new legs, but once she calmed down, she had fun. And seeing other young hospital patients busting moves inspired her, especially the girl dancing all around with her prosthetic leg. She says, “I’m going to be able to do that one day.” For now her next goal is to be able to walk across a stage next month to accept her high school diploma.
