For the last six years Sam Senseney has been on the kidney transplant list and as his health has declined, his granddaughter, Maddie Sabourin, has been by his side. The high school senior has spent years raising awareness and money for the American Kidney Fund while all family and friends were tested to see if they could be donors and none of them were a match. Maddie was a contestant in the Miss Georgia Outstanding Teen Pageant, her platform — raising awareness for organ donation. She personally raised $7,500 for the American Kidney Fund!
But the day after Maddie’s 18th birthday, she finally got the chance to find out if she could be a donor for her grandfather. “Originally, they told me no because they thought I was too young. But I was able to convince them that I'm strong enough so they gave me the test. I'm a perfect match"! Now the pair is scheduled to meet with doctors next week to schedule the transplant, which they hope will be within the month.
“It’s just amazing to know that after all my hard work and advocating, that I’m going to be the one,” Maddie says. “Papa is going to get all of his energy back, and he's going to live the life he did six years ago. And I’m going to get my best bud back!”
