Twice a month, kindergarten students from Concordia Academy in Omaha, Nebraska get to take a special field trip. The kids get to spend a few hours with their friends at the Azria Health Montclair senior center, and they call their buddies grandma and grandpa. Their goal is to bring joy and they certainly do a good job of it.
Teacher Shelley Dartmann has been bringing her students to see the seniors for 17 years because she sees how much the generations can learn from each other. While the kids are there, she teaches regular lessons and incorporates the seniors into them. The kids get to play, sing, and learn while they share smiles with their elderly friends.
“I love it,” says Azria resident Meary Max. “They bring a sunshine spot to the day every time they come.” And her buddy, six-year-old Dakota, says, “I just love seeing all the grandmas being happy.” And that’s what it’s all about.
