Indiana Jones would avoid one road in Illinois at all cost…and not because of the name.
If you're imagining Snake Road in the Shawnee National Forest of Illinois like a scene out of the adventurer’s movie, you're not far off. Forest managers closed the road yesterday, and they say it'll stay closed until May to protect thousands of snakes and other reptiles that are inching their way across the pavement on their way to mate.
Shawnee officials say the road is closed to cars, but is open to hikers - if you're brave enough. This is an annual “event” in the area and preparations for tourists and detours are made months in advance.
