Library book returned 76 years late had good excuse

The Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre accepted the book “Val Rides The Oregon Trail” back recently and waived the 554 dollar fee for one simple reason; the attack on Pearl Harbor happened just days after its scheduled return.

Robert Lockman, Jr., said he recently found the book in the basement of his Shavertown, Pa., home and discovered that his father, Robert Lockman, Sr., had checked it out when he was only 9 years old. That’s when junior set out to make things right.

The book is currently on display.
