Ralph and Mary Bass of Greer are being recognized today as South Carolina’s 2017 Longest Married Couple, by Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME), the country's “original faith-based marriage enrichment program”
The project is based on nominations received from 3rd parties. Ralph who is 92 and volunteers for Meals on Wheels, says he didn't give it a second thought when one of his clients told him that he had nominated them. But now that they've won "It makes you feel good. It makes me feel good to be recognized".
Ralph says the secret to a happy marriage from his perspective is to tell Mary every day how special she is.
“I love her more today than I did yesterday. She’s everything,” he said. Bass is still Mary’s “darling.” He calls her “honey.” Mary is sassy with her response. “I could get worse. A lot worse. I think I’ll keep him.
She met him at a skating rink in Charlotte when she was 15 and he was 18. They married shortly after meeting, on Aug 15, 1942.
