We’ve got microplastics floating around in our brains. The average human brain could contain a spoonful of them.
A new study published yesterday in the journal Nature Medicine found that there was about seven grams in the average brain, about as much as you'd find in a plastic disposable spoon.
They studied bodies 9 years ago and then did another study on bodies last year. The amount of plastic in brains increased dramatically by 50% between 2016 and 2024.
Livers and kidneys also showed increases, but the concentration in brains was 30 times greater. People with dementia had the highest levels of micro plastics. Researchers wanted to make clear that they are not claiming micro plastics lead to dementia just that they noticed the increase in brains that had dementia.
According to Science News we can't escape micro plastics as they are in the air we breathe. A 2020 Italian study found them in all fruits and vegetables. They're even finding micro plastics in aborted fetuses!
