Former Gamecock Hayden Hurst Pays Big Bucks To Save Local Newsman's Dog

Last night I was getting ready for bed and decided to scroll Twitter. One of the tweets that caught my attention was from ABC Columbia Sports Director Mike Gillespie.

Mike had adopted Wilbur, a Golden Irish Setter almost 5 years ago, saving Wilbur from a local five-day kill shelter on his final day. Wilbur is 8 now and should be in the prime of his life, however he's been very sick. The vet explained that he has a blockage in his intestines and that it's a $5000 procedure. As Mike explained on air he doesn't have $5000 so he used 3 credit cards and maxed them out to save his dog.

Mike's girlfriend Caroline recommended, they set up a GoFundMe account. He really hoped for a few hundred dollars but was pleasantly surprised that when he got home from his late night shift they were up to $2000! Then he was really shocked!

"I woke up to a text from Caroline, and she was like, 'You'll never believe this.' I said, 'What?' She said, 'Hayden Hurst just donated $3,000.' And, I said, 'Is he in any way related to Hayden Hurst who plays for the Falcons, who I used to cover at South Carolina?'

LOL! It was that Hayden and he has two dogs of his own. Mike went on Twitter again to thank Hayden for his donation but Hayden wouldn't have any of it. He replied No need

I know someone out there would do the same for me and my pups. God bless Mike!
