Victoria, a one-eyed Treeing Walker Coonhound that Lauren Gauthier had only rescued eight months earlier, saved her life. Victoria isn’t any special sort of detection dog, but because she was so persistent, that Lauren went to her doctor and had the spot checked out.
The pup would smell a specific part of Lauren’s nose and then lean out to look at her owner before leaning in to put her nose on Lauren’s again. She did it over and over until Lauren finally had her doc take a look and it turned out to be basal cell carcinoma skin cancer.
Lauren had surgery to remove the cancer and she’s incredibly grateful her new dog caught it early on. “There’s the old term ‘who rescued who’ and I think it’s especially true in Victoria’s case,” she says.
