Pet Bunny Saves Georgia Family

Last Friday morning, in CHAMBLEE, Georgia family escaped a house fire after their pet rabbit, Coco, woke them up by thumping and jumping about 30 seconds before the smoke detectors went off. Homeowner Erlene Rivera says she got up when she heard Coco going wild in his cage. She quickly rushed to wake her sister and 92-year-old mother. Erlene says they needed every second to carry their mom outside before the first floor became engulfed.

Fire crews say the blaze started on the back porch, where the family had gathered the previous day for Thanksgiving. Battalion Chief Keven Cavanaugh says that the fire likely started from a small warming fire the family thought they had fully put out in a metal barrel on the wooden deck.

The family adopted Coco when they bought their home years ago and found him under the property during renovations. That rabbit became their family pet and, in this case, their protector, by warning them just in time to save themselves Rivera is calling Coco their little guardian angel.
