Is Thanksgiving More Or Less This Year?

We've all heard the argument between President Trump and the media. Are the prices up or down for Thanksgiving this year.

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual report on what the cost of a Thanksgiving meal should be. The 40th edition has just come out and once again, their prices seem extremely low.

According to the group, the total cost of a Thanksgiving feast for 10 should be $55.18

  • That comes out to about $5.52 per person.
  • The total is down 5% from last year’s cost, which was $58.08.
  • The centerpiece of most Thanksgiving dinners, the turkey, is, of course, the most expensive item. The average price for a 16-pound frozen bird is $21.50, which is $1.34 per pound.
  • That’s actually down 16% from last year’s price of $25.67.
  • About half of the ingredients in the study went down in price, including dinner rolls and stuffing, but items like fresh vegetables are more this year.

Beyond the turkey, the rest of the meal for 10 the Farm Bureau has priced includes:

  • 14-ounces of cubed stuffing mix: $3.71 (down 9%)
  • 2 frozen pie crusts: $3.37 (down .8%)
  • Half pint of whipping cream: $1.87 (up 3.2%)
  • 1 pound of frozen peas: $2.03 (up 17.2%)
  • 1 dozen dinner rolls: $3.56 (down 14.6%)
  • Miscellaneous ingredients for preparing the meal: $3.61 (down 4.7%)
  • 30-ounce can of pumpkin pie mix: $4.16 (up .1%)
  • 1 gallon of whole milk: $3.73 (up 16.3%)
  • 3 pounds of sweet potatoes: $4.00 (up 37%)
  • 1-pound veggie tray (carrots & celery): $1.36 (up 61.3%)
  • 12-ounce bag of fresh cranberries: $2.28 (down 2.8%)
  • The Farm Bureau also looks at what the cost of adding boneless ham, Russet potatoes and frozen green beans would be. These additions hike the price by $21.91, bringing the total for dinner for 10 to $81.30.
