A decade ago, Jessica Riggs of Saltash, England, started experiencing debilitating symptoms which caused her to lose her job as a marine biologist. After several years, she was finally diagnosed with a rare spinal cord condition that causes neurological symptoms that are leading to her being paralyzed. Unfortunately, England has socialized medicine and since it's a rare operation they don't have anyone in the National Health Service who has done it.
Jessica found a clinic in Spain that does perform the surgery, but the procedure and her recovery will cost over $30-thousand. You also have to pay it up front! She explained the situation to her friends, who landed on an amazing fund raising idea. Actually they remembered a fund raising idea that a group of women in the same situation faced in 1998. Their story about a friend in England that was denied treatment by the NHS for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma led them to create their own nude calendar. That story became the 2003 film Calendar Girls starring Helen Mirren.
