Teen Saves Her Cousin After A Freak Accident

In Beeville, Texas, 13-year-old Shelby Daniels was visiting her 12-year-old cousin, Gio Rodriguez.

As KIII-TV reports Gio was using a knife to remove staples from a picture frame. According to Gio, the knife popped up and he accidentally severed an artery and tendon in his wrist! Shelby jumped in to save him with the first aid skills she learned from the Bee County Sheriff's Department's 'Stop the Bleed' program were.

Utilizing the training she received through the Junior Deputy program, She calmed Gio down so his heart wouldn't pump as fast and applied pressure with a towel to stop the bleeding. Sheriff Alden Southmayd expressed immense pride in Shelby’s actions, noting that her successful application of her training proves the value of the program. Ryan Trevino, a patrol sergeant who teaches the Stop the Bleed course, called her response a textbook example of what’s taught in the class, and her actions will be part of future training sessions.

Despite having likely saved her cousin’s life, Shelby downplays the need for any recognition, saying she was just doing what she knew how to do. But, Sheriff Southmayd says they plan to honor her at the next county commissioner's meeting for her bravery. Rodriguez, who was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital for vascular surgery and will undergo another surgery later in the week, is expected to recover.
