On Saturday morning, West Detroit resident Shantaesha Young woke up to screams outside her apartment. The house across the street with 7 people in it, was on fire.
She described the chaotic scene where a frantic mother was desperately trying to save her children. Several of the youngsters had run outside but she saw the Mom hanging a three-month-old baby out of the second floor window begging someone to catch them.
Young was on the phone with 911 and saw no one was coming to help so she did. Yes she caught the baby with her right hand while talking on the phone with her left. Being a mother herself this wasn't the first time she had done some serious multitasking. After the baby was dropped Mom jumped out the window herself.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the Detroit FD says Young's quick thinking and brave actions are the reason the family escaped with only minor injuries. When asked if she considers herself a hero, Young humbly says she was just in the right place at the right time.
