The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they are changing their name. They will retire the logo. This is after a 10 day review of the name by team officials and owner Dan Snyder. Snyder had been asked about changing the teams name back in 1999 when he bought them. As recently as 2013 he said that he would never change the name.
A poll in 2016 reported that 90 percent of native Americans were not offended by the team name according to the Washington Post. That is the same result they got in 2004. Snyder told the Post in 2016 "The Washington Redskins team, our fans and community have always believed our name represents honor, respect and pride. Today’s Washington Post polling shows Native Americans agree. We are gratified by this overwhelming support from the Native American community, and the team will proudly carry the Redskins name.”
The Washington Post did another poll last year which also got the same result of 90 percent not offended.
Perhaps new coach Ron Rivera had something to do with it when he told CBS Sports that "my eyes are wide open" and wanted a name change adding, "If we get it done in time for the season, it would be awesome."
As for what the new name will be they didn't say. Some of the top ranked guesses include Washington Senators and Washington Hogs.
So collectors need to stock up fast on Redskins gear! Amazon announced last week that they would no longer sell what they deemed to be racist merchandise.
