Jussie Smollett has filed new legal papers in Chicago because America believes he is innocent.
In case you forgot on 1/29/19 Jussie called police to his apartment and told them he had been attacked by 2 men as he was walking home from buying a Subway sandwich. Some things that stood out to everyone who heard that story. Why did he walk 2 blocks in sub freezing weather at 2:30 in the morning to buy a sandwich? Next, he said his assailants were white, wearing Trump hats and yelling this is MAGA country N word. Finally they put a noose around his neck and dumped an "unknown liquid" he believed was bleach to make him white. He walked home after the attack rather than call the cops from the park. He didn't wash the liquid off or remove the noose before the cops arrived.
Then as the investigation began police found that 2 men who worked as Jussie's trainers were seen on video buying the red hats, rope and bleach a block from the park shortly before the "crime". They tracked these guys down who then confessed to everything and showed the check that Jussie had written to get them to participate in this scheme. They said he was frustrated that he wasn't getting enough press and this would put him on the front page of every paper in the world.
The police then arrested Jussie for filing a false police report. He was sentenced to 16 hours community service and forfeited his $10,000 bond. A few months later the police sued him for the cost of their investigation, $130,105.15.
In February of 2020 after a year long investigation Jussie was indicted on 6 more counts in regards to his false police reports.
Now TMZ reports that Jussie is trying to take advantage of the police protests to claim this is in someway about him. In his legal filing this week he and his legal team state; “As we see millions across the country rise up to protest and expose police misconduct, the City, by its refusal to produce the requested documents, is choosing to actively resist a citizen’s lawful efforts to reveal dishonesty.”
They go on to say the city and the Chicago PD knew he was innocent but relentlessly pursued him even after the charges were dismissed.
Smollett's case is now based on the firing of Chicago's top cop last December. However according to the Chicago Tribune Eddie Johnson was fired by the Mayor after he allegedly lied to her about being caught asleep in his police vehicle at a stop sign. He may have been drunk. But no one has questioned how his department was run in regards to the Smollett case.
