The BBC reports that researchers in the U.K. are working on a way to help stop the spread of coronavirus using dogs. Durham University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have partnered with the charity Medical Detection Dogs on a trial to see if dogs can sniff out patients with COVID-19.
Research has shown dogs detect malaria "with a level of accuracy above the World Health Organisation standards for a diagnostic".
Dogs have also been trained to smell diseases including Cancer and Parkinson’s disease in people, so they’re hoping it will work with coronavirus as well. If it’s a success, the dogs could be used to detect potential carriers in large groups of people, who can then be given an actual coronavirus test. The dogs may be ready in six weeks, if the trial has positive results.
This would be a game changer! Imagine an infected person with no symptoms being stopped before they enter a mall or stadium. They don't come in contact with hundreds or even thousands of others!
